Help us Help Them: Tiger Conservation at the Palm Beach Zoo
What you Should Know about Tigers
Tigers are endangered and numbers in the wild are declining.
The wild tiger population has decreased by 95% over the last century.
The habitat/range area for wild tigers has decreased by 40% in the last decade.
3 subspecies of tiger are already extinct: Bali, Javan, and Caspian.
6 subspecies are still living: Malayan, Amur, Bengal, Indochinese, South China, and Sumatran. (The Palm Beach Zoo now houses three Malayan tigers.)
It is estimated that less than 3,200 tigers of all subspecies are living in the wild.
There may be as few as 350 Malayan tigers remaining in the wild.
Poaching and habitat loss are the largest threats to tigers in the wild.
Even in India, a recent government census suggests there may be as few as 1,400 tigers left.
How You Can Help
Support the Tiger Fund at the Palm Beach Zoo
You can participate in tiger conservation by supporting the Palm Beach Zoo Tiger Fund. With your help, the Palm Beach community can save this endangered species from extinction. Captive breeding of rare tigers is one important step in ensuring their survival. Money raised will be used to achieve these priorities:
Expansion and Upgrade of the Tiger Falls Exhibit:
The Palm Beach Zoo participates in the Association of Zoos and Aquarium (AZA) Species Survival Plan for tigers.
Improved space for Mata and Berapi, our breeding pair of Malayan tigers
Habitat upgrades to accommodate anticipated Malayan tiger cubs
Improved graphics to educate visitors about tiger conservation
Goal - $1 Million
Partnership with Panthera’s “Tigers Forever” project:
“Tigers Forever” is a collaborative partnership between Panthera, The Wildlife Conservation Society, and the Palm Beach Zoo.
The goal is to increase tiger numbers by 50% at key sites within ten years.
The Palm Beach Zoo is Panthera’s principal zoo partner
